Researchers from the University of Utah have come up with a way to use Wireless signals using the 802.15.4 protocol to track objects through walls using a process called variance-based radio tomographic imaging.
Check out the video for full details.
Using this method they are able to quickly and accurately track a person within a building moving to different locations. The possible applications for this new piece of research have already been considered and many hope it will become part of Emergency Services kits.
IBM have previously talked about 802.15.6 uses in the future and they have suggested a possible use for this short range low power connectivity would be the ability to exchange business cards via a tiny device built into your shoes which would commence data transfer once another person wearing a similar device is within range. Very futuristic!
